BILBAO SPAIN
Barcelona 6 August 1971
SIR:
In our last letter we set out for you a brief account of our arrival on the solid star EARTH, and our first stay in France.
ARRIVAL OF THE UMMITES IN SPAIN
As a Spaniard, you would no doubt wish to know about the entry into your country, which interested us at that time for two reasons: It would allow us to know more deeply aspects related to History. On the other hand the Spanish peninsula constituted a quiet platform for some basic research in the field of vertebrate biology.
Our arrival in Spain (the one who writes this was not on the star Earth at that time) was affected by serious obstacles.
My expeditionary brothers were trying to locate a region with certain ecological and climatological characteristics which at the same time was governed by an administrative structure adequate enough to satisfy our own rules of group security.
The tourist influx into the peninsula, then beginning its present heyday, and the fact that the authorities were not excessively analytical regarding the identity of the foreigners who for that reason crossed the frontier, constituted a high guarantee for the initial plans of my people.
Three of our brothers among those then transferred to Earth from UMMO had specialized during their residence in France in the study of phonetics associated with languages of Latin root, and could verbalize with acceptable ability languages such as Romanian, Spanish, Catalan, Sephardi and Italian.
Unfortunately one of them had atrophied (as is very normal among the Oemii of UMMO) mouth cords, which constituted one more risk to get round, even though our acoustic amplification devices make such a defect unrecognizable to a not very observant human.
For this reason he was excluded from the operation, his superior replacing him with another, younger brother, specialized in animal metabolism and the analysis of ecosystems, but with no linguistic knowledge whatever of the Castilian language, so that he had to undergo an intensive provisional preparation in this language.
The three crossed the Spanish frontier at Irún (One of them would return later) provided with forged passports from a nation of northern Europe, and with micro-equipment for biological research. They carried, besides Spanish money, an information dossier with names of citizens of Spain and information on customs and characteristics of Spanish society: ABAEXII 4 begotten by ABAEXII 3 travelled independently with a passport in the name of a supposed university professor specialized in Zootechnics, and his brothers with fraudulent cards as professionals in the field of Medicine.
Our initial plan excluded as a residence both large cities such as Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia or Seville, and small rural centres, since in the latter it would have been very difficult to maintain our anonymity within the limits demanded by our own security.
When my brothers arrived, no definitive place of residence had been decided. A list had nevertheless been selected which included, among six towns, four especially optimal ones. Segovia, Albacete, Ávila, Jaén; a serious aspect of the problem at that time was to find citizens of Spanish nationality who could adopt the role of cover (still unknown to themselves) for the stay of my research brothers.
Analysing the information at my disposal, I know that at first everything seemed solved. Through the Spanish press arriving in Marseilles, the existence was known of an estate on the outskirts of the town of Jaén which at that time was being put up for sale. Through a French agency for legal formalities the purchase negotiations were begun. The idea was apparently to set up a poultry-farming establishment which would camouflage the genuine nature of the future research.
The plan did not prosper, because the need to hire Spanish humans for the farm was unavoidable.
For this reason an attempt to open a veterinary clinic in Ciudad Real or Segovia also failed.
SECOND PHASE: STUDY OF THE CITIZENS.
But on the other hand, my brothers had managed to procure a list of Spanish citizens with autobiographical data through three different documentary sources: A) From a department linked to the ministry of "Foreign Affairs". B) From an organization of Spanish Exiles from the civil war of 1936 - 1939. C) and the private archive of a former official of the Thorez period.
This fragmented information was analysed by our XAANMOOBAABUASII data-processing modules, which directed our investigations towards two persons, both of the YIE sex (Woman).
The owner of a zootechnical establishment in Extremadura and another Spanish citizen in whom concomitant circumstances of high interest concurred, which could make her (as indeed happened) an excellent and involuntary assistant.
The data source for this last one was a dossier, a copy of another original belonging to an archive of the "French Deuxième Bureau", where the services rendered as an agent of the Spanish Nationalist Fifth Column to the cause of the Spanish Nationalist Army during the Spanish war, in the months of June, July and September 1936, were outlined.
The most interesting thing for us was a marginal note on this lady's file, which alluded to certain disorders of Psychopathological aetiology suffered by this lady, and the brief typed summary on this same file, among whose hobbies her love for animals was mentioned.
A whole programme was planned to make friends with this woman, estimating that she could be made an offer of collaboration that would compensate her for her help; my brothers judged that in no case would the true alien-to-Earth identity of our people be revealed to her.
Other plans for linking up with her were held in reserve until contact was made with her and she showed us her personality better.
My brothers achieved this in Albacete, one of them having an interview with Doña Margarita Ruiz de Lihori when she was suffering from some painful discomforts (of no objective importance) in the sacral region as well as constant headaches.
My brother identified himself as a doctor of Nordic nationality, and it was very easy for him not only to obtain the remission of her discomforts but to neutralize the crisis of psychic anxiety that frequently tormented her. He thus won the unconditional friendship of the Lady Marquise of Villasante, to whom a few weeks later my other brother involved in the operation was introduced.
THEY BEGIN THE ANALYSIS OF IMMUNOGLOBULINS IN VERTEBRATES.
The most important programme during that period concerned the analysis of immunoglobulins in vertebrates: study of electrophoretic velocity and the corresponding assessment of the amino-acid sequences of the polypeptide chains of various antibodies.
The aim was to find out whether the genetic data that code what the biologists of Earth call the "variable portion" of the concatenated networks of globulins could be subjected to various types of mutation, using our techniques called by the biologists of UMMO (UULYAGGXAA) //Frequencies of the elastic medium air included in the ultra-acoustic spectrum, obtained in a small neighbourhood by means of rapid variations of thermal gradient//.
This technique makes it possible to obtain at a distance variations of temperature following a process coded beforehand. If this process corresponds to an elementary function of time, such as a periodic function (for example a train of damped sinusoidal pulses), there are obtained at that point, far distant from the generating equipment, thermal pulses irradiated from that point as an emitting focus.
If the medium in which the phenomenon takes place is elastic: air, for example, the variable thermal gradient is translated into high-frequency pressure waves (acoustic waves).
PRACTICAL USEFULNESS OF THE TECHNIQUE DESCRIBED.
In practice two points very close to each other are located (at the distance represented, for example, by the length of an organic molecule), which are excited with two different frequencies. The resultant in their neighbourhood is, by heterodyne or beat effect, a frequency capable of disturbing and even destroying the structure of a protein chain or the coded sequence of an RNA network or chain, altering the information contained in it. (Mutation or even death).
PROBLEMS ARISING DURING THE STAY.
Doña. Margarita Ruiz de Lihori returned to Madrid, but my brothers went on carrying out their studies in the basement of that old building in the calle Mayor. They counted (and this was part of the strategy studied before getting in touch with that respectable lady) on the rumours that might circulate in the social milieu of that urban area being easily disregarded, or listened to with indifference, by those intelligent humans of Albacete, local authorities or relatives who, knowing the eccentric habits of Doña. Margarita, provoked frequent comments among neighbours and acquaintances. This was therefore the best cover for the discreet work of my brothers.
There were serious obstacles to the practice of this reserve. A gentleman closely bound by affection to Doña. Margarita suspected our existence and was finally informed, with great reservations and promises that he would keep absolute silence, by the Lady Marquise herself. Our stay was also known to a maidservant, already old and very faithful to her mistress, as well as to a neighbour to whom a reward had to be offered so that he would be discreet.
On the other hand, a frequent visitor to the building named Don Emilio López was one afternoon on the point of discovering my brothers' stay, for which reason, by common agreement, Doña Margarita and her guests modified the initial security rules, and during the day they no longer set foot in the upper rooms.
There was above all the risk that the maidservant might make comments that would reveal the situation, so it became necessary to monitor her verbal expressions outside the house by means of phonetic recording. Never, sir, did your sister in Albacete break the word given to the owner of the building.
It was then that the other entrance connecting the basement with the garden was fitted out. My brothers' work continued in the building, even during the long periods in which the Marquise of Villasante and Baroness of Alcahalí went on keeping her occasional residence in Madrid, Spain.
In June 1953 my brothers suffered an incident in an ironmonger's shop in the town of Albacete which made our superiors think seriously about the advisability of cancelling our stay in Spain.
In August the situation became untenable, for at that time two children of Doña. Margarita Ruiz de Lihori were living in the building, Don José María Shelli and Doña. Margarita Shelli, then ill with a nephropathic condition which was then beginning to be complicated by the first symptoms, not diagnosed by her doctor, of a lymphoid leukaemia.
They did not know of the existence of the two Oemii. The relations of these humans with their mother had reached a crisis some time before for reasons of an intimate family nature. Her children did not understand that the evidently anomalous conduct of Doña Margarita Ruiz de Lihori was conditioned by her special personality traits, psychopathologically altered, so that the lady's state of deep frustration frequently translated into sad altercations which slowly vitiated and poisoned the family setting.
MOVE OF RESIDENCE TO MADRID AND RETURN TO ALBACETE.
In this situation, my brothers moved to Madrid for the first time, and Doña Margarita personally arranged for them the acquisition of a dwelling in the calle de Menéndez Pelayo, giving them besides access to some lands called "La Zorrilla", family property.
At the end of August 1953, an intimate friend of Doña Margarita Shelli informed the Lady Marquise that her daughter was showing a worsening of her condition, this lady deciding, not without first overcoming the strong resistance of Mr. Bassols, who refused in an inhuman way to let her give support to the kind-hearted invalid.
My brothers refrained from intervening in a matter closely linked to the privacy of humans.
We can state moreover that after a very strong upset experienced by this lady on 4 September 1953, one of my brothers was asked by her to advise her on the matter. He limited himself to suggesting that she act according to the principles dictated by her moral conscience.
In the hope that the removal of the invalid would leave the building free, my brothers moved from Madrid to Albacete (Spain) on the same date on which this lady travelled to the same city; they made the journey independently, in a taxi hired for the purpose.
SERIOUS INCIDENT IN THE BIOLOGICAL EXPERIMENTS.
It is precisely on the date on which Doña Margarita arrives at her residence in Albacete that a very grave event occurs, which we judge to be one of the most unfortunate incidents of our stay on Earth. All the more grave because we sincerely admit to being fully responsible for it, this statement not being mitigated by the objection that the unleashing of later events had as its origin an understandable imprudence on the part of the Lady Marquise.
For reasons of security, we cannot, Mr. ……………, be too explicit in the account of this murky affair. We wish to warn you beforehand that all the aspects we are revealing to you in this story are rigorously faithful to the truth, without deliberate distortions. But we omit many other data and various implications deriving from that sad event. Some day you may be able to know (if our superiors judge that its exposure cannot cause us any trouble) all the facets of some proceedings that could have upset all the plans of my expeditionary brothers.
CAUSE OF THE INCIDENT: "A VIRAL ENTITY UNKNOWN ON EARTH".
Some months earlier (the project had been started in an old villa on the outskirts of Marseilles, France) my brothers had perfected a research programme related to a viral entity unknown on the solid star Earth, but familiar (though localized) to the biologist brothers of UMMO.
The structure of these viral specimens has a certain analogy with the circular DNA chain belonging to the EARTH virus known to you as "rat Polyoma Virus", owing to its spatial arrangement, but that entity is provided with a much more complex capsule.
My brothers had discovered that the imported virus did not multiply in animal tissues of EARTH as long as their metabolic process was normal: "such viruses, which we code as (XXX), are not capable of perforating the mucoprotein layers of the cell membrane under normal biological conditions.
But they also found that such protection ceased shortly before the histological tissue degenerated through death of the carrier animal or through necrosis of the cellular area. Under these conditions the cells cease to be immunocompetent.
Naturally, under these conditions the virus is not dangerous for the men or animals of EARTH, although embryonic states of activation were observed in animals ill from other aetiological factors.
Today we know that this is not so: but in those years we did not know whether the virus to which we refer might mutate into other entities that would make it a pathogenic agent dangerous to the living beings of EARTH.
It was brought to this cold star simply for purposes of pure experimentation.
It was also discovered that the virus (incidentally, hard to vitrify) remained on the surface of the cell membrane for eight months or more, provided it was a matter of internal tissues. The surviving colonies then degenerated rapidly, in case, as we have informed you, the death of the corresponding tissues did not occur.
UNIT FOR BIOLOGICAL ASSESSMENTS, THE "AXEESII".
On the other hand, we possess means that allow us to detect the location of these and other viral colonies in which the number of individuals is greater than 128 individuals per AXEESII (UNIT OF VOLUME FOR BIOLOGICAL ASSESSMENTS EQUIVALENT TO 36.77 cubic millimetres (1)) by means of exploratory techniques at a distance not greater than 78 metres for this viral density.
Note (1) equivalent to 11,693,818.24 individuals/ mm3.
EVOLUTION OF THE INCIDENT AND CONTROL.
My brothers located viral foci of some importance, eighteen in number, in the body of Doña Margarita Ruiz de Lihori, in a neighbour from the calle Mayor, in her daughter Margarita Shelli, and in three animals of the house.
It was relatively simple to destroy those vital nuclei in their apparent totality. Another twenty-six contaminated areas were detected when, using more precise resolving techniques, another four brothers came with all urgency to Spain from France (even violating security rules), provided with suitable equipment.
What caused my brothers real anguish was not knowing to what extent viral nuclei of lesser size might have escaped our control. On the one hand, that day relatives and friends had come to the Lady Marquise's house to inquire about the journey planned to move the invalid to Madrid.
Meanwhile those humans were witnesses of a sad incident caused by family tensions. They did not know the dramatic background that all were living through because of strange circumstances linked to our presence in that town.
Although in the first hours all those persons were observed after being located, without their showing symptoms of being carriers of the virus, nothing prevented one from considering that infinitesimal nuclei undetectable by our methods might have escaped rigorous control. A fairly complete sterilization could be carried out over an extensive area, but such a measure did not guarantee that viral elements located in inaccessible layers might not escape our prophylactic operations.
That these forebodings were unfortunately confirmed is proved by the case of Margarita Shelli, daughter of Doña Margarita Ruiz de Lihori.
Everything seemed forgotten. If the viral foci, after a certain margin of time, had not made their appearance before the detection equipment…….. by placing under surveillance persons and topological areas of the building.
NEW VIRAL NUCLEI APPEAR.
Periodic explorations which were later extended to the whole city of Albacete and, by reason of travel, to towns such as Valencia, Almansa, Barrax and Murcia (Spain). It did not seem probable that what could have become a genuine catastrophe might prosper (we insist that a graver description was justified in those years. With the present perspective, such fears, even in the case that we had not been able to control the infection of the star Earth, everything would have been reduced to enriching it with one more viral species of almost innocuous characteristics).
My two brothers remained in the company of a third who joined the group, but residing in another place, in "Albacete", the experiments being resumed, this time taking all the security rules to the limit (even after the programme of biological studies using viral species had been cancelled).
But on 18 November 1953 my brothers, dismayed, discovered a viral focus of that nature in the nasal cavities of a Spanish human, precisely the husband of the woman living in the calle Mayor who that day, without knowing it, had been contaminated. Naturally, the nucleus was exterminated at a distance, since fortunately it was located in areas that were not deep.
A more careful exploration detected a second, very small nucleus in a pulmonary alveolus. Without the human's authorization it was impossible at such a depth to destroy the infectious group, but on the other hand its location, and the fact that this man of EARTH enjoyed excellent health, so that the virus would degenerate before affecting his tissues, did not give rise to greater anxieties.
But my brothers, on the other hand, alerted by this outbreak, began a second investigation. On 27 November two of them went to Madrid, going to the home of Doña Margarita Ruiz de Lihori. At first they did not go up to the flat. From the lavatory of a nearby bar, and using the equipment they carried with them, they discovered that their fears were unfortunately confirmed.
DOÑA MARGARITA'S DAUGHTER WAS A CARRIER OF THE VIRUS.
As many as six viral foci were located in the body of the invalid, all of them deep enough for their external irradiation not to be feared, but presenting on the other hand the difficulty inherent in their location: they could not be destroyed at a distance. The affected zones were located in the eyeballs, epithelial tissue of the tongue, and palmar dermis.
In addition some kind of mutational alteration was noted in the structure of the viral specimen. This caused greater alarm in my brothers, who were obliged to meet Doña Margarita and confess their fears to her, distorting the truth to some degree.
There was in truth no risk at all of contamination, but in case that human should perish, given the advanced state of her pathological condition, a development (of very grave consequences) on the part of the species was foreseeable.
Then it would be very difficult to control the process of irradiation, even with the extreme measure of revealing the matter to the health authorities of Spain, who on the other hand would have been very difficult to convince.
In......................................... my brothers studied the situation, and from this country and from France six Oemii specialized in Biology and related disciplines came by plane with all urgency.
It was not possible, on the other hand, to obtain a remission of the course shown by Doña Margarita's Daughter without bringing suitable equipment, without gaining access to the invalid and making ourselves known, which would have implied a grave risk for our programme of stay on EARTH.
Even so this possibility was seriously studied; our superiors nevertheless decided to adopt other measures. A plan was even set in motion to seize the corpse if necessary.
On 12 January eleven of my brothers who had come for the purpose were in Madrid, despite the difficulties of every kind that our massive presence in Madrid entailed.
A few days later this kind-hearted young woman died. It is not necessary for us to detail the prophylactic measures that had to be adopted.
Above any scruple that you or your brothers of EARTH may wish to allege, unavoidable considerations of a moral or sanitary order took precedence.
SELF-CONCLUSIONS: Seen with the eyes of an uninformed human of EARTH, the facts would be judged repulsive and astonishing.
We do not expect you to accept this version any more readily. We know that it is real, although the simple statement of some facts with no other guarantee than anonymity does not constitute any proof for you men of EARTH.
We hope that some day you yourselves will confirm our testimony by your own means.
